Mercatello sul Metauro is a splendid town, in the far north of the Marche at the foot of the Bocca Trabaria Pass, the gateway to Umbria, on the road to Città di Castello.
It has been called “Nobile Terra” since time immemorial, a qualification that derives from its ancient origins, the nobility of its inhabitants, important monuments, history and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it.
The historic centre, perfectly preserved in its medieval fabric, combines the harmony of its streets with the elegance and grandeur of its many buildings.
The Collegiate Church, the Pinacoteca Church of San Francesco, Palazzo Gasparini, Palazzo Ducale, the Palazzaccio, the Romanesque bridge over the Metauro river. From the cloistered convent of Santa Veronica Giuliani where the town was born, you can see from afar in its particular charm, surrounded by a lush and luxuriant natural environment, Castello della Pieve, a thousand-year-old rural village that is perfectly preserved today.

Mercatello in the Alta Val Metauro
To learn more about Mercatello sul Metauro
Mercatello sul Metauro is a typical upper valley town inhabited since the time of the Etruscans. In Roman times it suffered the various hardships of the Barbarian invasions. Later it acquired the role of a small market town (hence its name Mercatello). However, the current town was only formed in the mid-13th century. In 1417 it passed into the dominions of the future duchy of Urbino. Rich in monuments, the town offers visitors the ancient Collegiate church, with an adjoining museum of sacred furnishings and vestments, and the Romanesque church of S. Francesco, with an adjoining art gallery where precious paintings on wood from the 13th and 14th centuries are preserved. Other churches include those of S. Chiara, S. Croce and S. Maria del Metauro, in addition to the Capuchin Monastery. Among the civic buildings, Palazzo Gasparini stands out together with the Palazzo Ducale, the so-called Palazzaccio, and the pretty Romanesque bridge over the Metauro river.
Mercatello is made more attractive by the perfect conservation of its main monuments and by the beautiful farmhouses on its outskirts and the proximity to the spectacular village of Castello della Pieve, just outside the town, which may be reached by footpaths that are suitable for hikers, cyclists, and horse riders.
