A village immersed in the fantastic scenery of Alpe della Luna.
Due to its history and the nature of its territory, the municipality of Borgo Pace immersed in the fantastic scenery of the Alpe della Luna, is distributed in numerous hamlets and rural agglomerations that often originated from the medieval castles in which the inhabitants had taken refuge.
Borgo Pace was born from the Castrum Abbatiae del Piano de l’Aiola, located at the top of the hill, which later became Castel Bavia, built to defend the abbey of Lamoli. In the second half of the 14th century, the territory was entrusted to Count Antonio da Montefeltro. Under this dynasty, particularly in the period of its greatest exponent, Federico II, the entire area experienced the splendid season of the Urbino Renaissance.

Borgo Pace in the Alta Val Metauro
Find out more about Borgo Pace
The town was for centuries the heart of Massa Trabaria, an area from which came the large tree trunks used in the construction of the roofs of the great basilicas and major public buildings in Rome, so much so that in the first half of the 19th century it obtained the title of Municipality and jurisdiction over the hamlets of Lamoli, Parchiule, Sompiano, Palazzo Mucci, Castel de Fabbri and Dese, which are still active and important components of the territory.
In August 1944 Borgo Pace, which had become a German stronghold due to its strategic position, was razed to the ground and subsequently declared a “Martyr Land of the War”.
Today Borgo Pace is a town of about 550 inhabitants, with a very large territory (56 km2) that embraces the entire Apennine slope up to the Bocca Trabaria pass, which represents an ideal place to come into contact with the nature, culture and spirituality of the Alta Valle del Metauro. Its accommodation facilities, excellent food and wine (Patata Rossa di Sompiano, Pasta di Borgo Pace just to name a few), sports facilities and a network of well-marked trails and small remote villages make it an ideal centre for fully immersing yourself in the central Apennines.
Here the Metauro River originates, from the union of two streams that join just below the town. On one side, in fact, the town is lapped by the Meta stream, which originates from the mountain ridge near Bocca Trabaria, and in its descent crosses the hamlet of Lamoli; on the other side flows the Auro stream that comes from nearby Tuscany and crosses the village of Parchiule.
There are several footpaths out of the village which make for delightful walks in nature, or to see where the charcoal burners work.
In summer you can also swim in the natural pools and waterfalls created by the Meta and Auro rivers along their route: Borgo Pace also offers ecotourism and one of the experiences that is definitely not to be missed is swimming in environments in close contact with wild nature, in the heart of the Marche Apennines; not far from the town centre in fact there are perfect places to swim in relaxation and privacy in clear and uncontaminated water, with the backdrop of breathtaking views immersed in nature.
Due to the particular geological conformation of the area, in fact, the Auro torrent is characterized by a long series of waterfalls and natural pools, where it is possible to dive and swim. There are also several places along the river where you can bathe in sulphurous pools, whose beneficial properties for health and skin have been known since ancient times.
But not only that; near the confluence of the Meta and Auro rivers, you can visit the Casa della Scrittura (House of Writing), a socio-cultural project for literary appreciation, which houses the Museo della Scrittura and the Permanent Photographic Exhibition of the Charcoal Burners.
For sports lovers, on the other hand, a few steps from the historic centre is a 15-hole grass golf course with 5 greens and 4 more under construction.
Finally, not to be missed is the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, commissioned by Benedictine monks between the 9th and 10th centuries which still preserves the intact original structure with three naves and the typical gabled façade and which houses the Museum of Natural Colours, unique in Italy and beyond.
