Sant’Angelo in Vado

Sasso Waterfall

This is the largest waterfall on the Metauro, 12 meters high and 60 meters wide, considered one of the ten most beautiful in Italy. The Sasso waterfall originates from the presence of a bank of limestone layers (Bisciaro) arranged in reggipoggio and therefore more resistant to river erosion. There is a vantage point from where you can walk up a stretch of the left bank, between the rocks emerging in the riverbed and the hygrophilous vegetation of the bank, with black poplar, white willow, basket willow, red willow, hops, cress, butterbur, reed, watercress, pendulous sedge and marsh rush. In the water there are green frog, river crab and Ancilo and Fisa molluscs. In dry periods you can also cross the river on the rocks that protrude straight above the waterfall.

To visit the waterfall from below you need to access the river from a renovated house, the Mulino del Sasso, which retains few traces of the functional structures of the original mill. Standing on the bank at the base of the waterfall, we can better appreciate its beauty, especially when a flood increases the flow of water. Among the birds present: passerines, migratory birds, aquatic birds and the fantastic kingfisher.
A few steps from the waterfall, surrounded by greenery and the tranquility of nature, you will find an equipped picnic area. This area is ideal for a relaxing break outdoors, where you can enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by the beauty of nature. The area is equipped with tables, benches and barbecue facilities, making it the perfect place to spend pleasant moments with family and friends.
