Sant’Angelo in Vado

San Filippo

San Filippo dates back to the 15th century; initially it was an oratory dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. In 1605 it was completely restored, taking on the unusual octagonal plan following a vow made by the inhabitants on the occasion of the birth of Federico Ubaldo, son of the last Duke of Urbino Francesco Maria II Della Rovere. Only in the 19th century did it take its current name of San Filippo.

The interior is sumptuous and, like a treasure chest, houses many works of art starting from the splendid dome frescoed in tempera by August Albrecht Wallenstein dated 1629 with the Stories of the Virgin accompanied by Sibyls and Prophets, the valuable wooden statue of the Virgin of the Annunciation from the 15th century attributed to Lorenzo Ghiberti housed in the central altar whose angel has flown away while the other altars in gilded and carved wood of local manufacture preserve canvases and panels of great value by Raffaellin del Colle, Gian Giacomo Pandolfi, Francesco Mancini etc.
