The church of San Pietro
The church of San Pietro, with its homonymous square, is located at the top of the Borgo Storico, at the foot of the Brancaleoni Castle. Its origins date back at least to the 14th century. In 1562 Lucrezia Ubaldini, widow of Count Federico II (second branch of the Brancaleoni family) donated the church to the Confraternity of the “Corpo di Cristo”, later called the “Santissimo Sacramento”. In 1649 Count Antonio III Brancaleoni began the renovation of the old church which was completed in 1773, thanks to a legacy from Countess Anna Giulia Brancaleoni.
The elegant 16th century portal is that of the previous church. The altarpiece of the high altar depicting “The Delivery of the Keys to Saint Peter”, attributable to the Durantino G. Picchi, comes from the old church of Santo Stefano, as do the two statues on the sides of the presbytery, San Crescentino and San Rocco from the Brandani school.
In the right altar, dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto, there is a painting of the Virgin of Loreto with Saints Bartholomew and Emidio, made by Carlo Paolucci of Urbino in 1778 commissioned by Don Ulderico Brancaleoni Matterozzi. The left altar is dedicated to the “Crucifix”, whose image is enclosed in a niche.
On the left side of the entrance is a painting by the artist Raimondo Rossi, which depicts the Palazzini brothers, the places dearest to them and the popes under whom they served the Church.
