Mercatello sul Metauro
Castello della Pieve
Almost on the border with Umbria, halfway between Mercatello sul Metauro and Borgo Pace, is Castello della Pieve. It is a characteristic village, tiny but beautiful, which is recognizable by its medieval tower, the row of houses made of dark stone, the small seventeenth-century church of San Giovanni Battista in the centre, surmounted by a modest bell tower. This jewel-village was one of the fortifications that constituted the defensive system of the small Province of Massa Trabaria.
According to tradition, in 1301, the conference that decided the exile of Dante from Florence was held here.
