Mascherone

In 1886, the Mascherone fountain was built at the foot of the tower and has become one of the symbols of Fermignano. Over the years, the basin of the fountain suffered some damage and its famous mask was half destroyed. The restorations of the tower at the end of the 20th century also included the Mascherone fountain. The work was entrusted to local restorers who, realizing that the mask was covered by a thin layer of cement lime, removed it, thus restoring it to its original features with its clay colour.

In times past, on Holy Saturday at 11:00, during the dissolution of the bells, silent for the whole of Lent, families would go to the nearest water source to rinse their faces. A gesture that symbolized rebirth and purification, a ritual that united spirituality and community. Thanks to the initiative of the local community, supported by the Pro Loco and the Parish, this ancient custom has been brought back to life and on Holy Saturday the community gathers in front of the Mascaron fountain to repeat the gesture of washing their faces as a sign of renewal and hope and to revive this ancient tradition, which celebrates the bond with the historical roots of the town.
