Piobbico

Church of Sant’Antonio

In the square of the same name in the historic centre of the town, a residential nucleus perhaps preceding the village, stands the small church dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate. It was built by Antonio I Brancaleoni of Monaldo in 1375 in fulfillment of a vow. It was located in the same place as the current one, but with the entrance facing the river and the village. Fallen into ruins due to the earthquake of 1781, it was rebuilt by Don Ulderico Brancaleoni and reopened for worship on 17 January 1788. It is in neoclassical style with a single nave and a single altar. The canvas in the apse, by an unknown artist, depicts the Crucifix with Saint Anthony the Abbot and Saint Catherine of Alexandria at the foot of the cross. The stations of the Via Crucis are Spanish prints. After the war it was restored with the remaking of the roof and part of the facade.
